Clinical Training:

Midwestern University AZ offered an incredible experience compared to most other programs. The school’s philosophy is you get as much clinical experience as you can handle if you strive and work for it. I made sure to take advantage of this opportunity and have been able to expand my clinical repertoire beyond most dental students. My 3rd year in dental school, in addition to my clinical experiences, I took 200 credits in CE, most of which was hands-on learning, in aspects of dentistry that interested me. While in dental school, I planned and placed, with various oral surgeons, periodontists, and general dentists, 40 implants using Bicon and Biohorizon implant systems applying various surgical techniques such as: fully guided surgery, alveoplasty, all on 4, socket preservation with walled defects, impacted 3rd extractions, immediate implant placement and interim restorations for anterior implants.

I made an effort at the beginning of my dental career to pursue digital dentistry. I spent my break weeks the first 2 years in dental school learning how to use Planmeca’s E4D software so that I could achieve success in school clinic with CAD/CAM. In my 3rd year I helped implement the protocols and workflows for designing and printing of surgical guides using Blue Sky Bio software and the Form 2 printer. I restored the vast majority of my crowns using the E4D software with many being completed after a 3 hour appointment.

While in the Navy I continued to expand my skill set and bettering my capabilities as a comprehensive dentist continuing 100+ credits of CE a year and month-long rotations with Oral Surgery and Periodontology at Naval Hospital Bremerton Bangor. While in the Pacific Northwest I was permitted to moonlight and became a referral source for multiple dentists in the area for surgical procedures which mostly consisted of implant placement, surgical extractions, guided bone regeneration, crestal sinus lifts, and site preservation. While I spent my last 3 years serving the Navy at Camp Lejeune I became my clinics referral source for all wisdom teeth extractions. Short of 4 full bony impactions of which I would refer to Oral Surgery I performed the majority of our 7 doc clinics extractions.

Interpersonal Skills:

The vast majority of patients at the Midwestern clinic consist of patients over the age of 65. Most patients would present with large treatment plans requiring extensive treatment, and it was not uncommon for patients to provide a list of 10+ medications. Midwestern believes in treating the clinic as if we are in a private practice setting. This means the patients we treat are our patients for the duration of our stay at the school. The students were not fighting for patients and were able to build a relationship with the patients. I wish to be able to continue the skills I nurtured in dental school in the private practice setting as a dental practice owner. An opportunity working with your practice offers an exciting experience for me to use my skills and experience to expand my knowledge and passion for our profession.

The Name's Bond, Tyler Bond

Contradicting almost everything a millennial represents, this fourth-year dental student at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, was accepted into multiple dental schools after completing only a year and a half of his undergrad. What’s more, is Bond has set the record at his school for the most implants placed and is already working on a high profile full arch case. Did we mention he’s a newlywed with a 14-month-old and he’s entering the Navy Dental Corps? As a new member of the AAID, Bond is a great representative for the next generation of implant dentists.
